Don't Be Afraid:  By Debbie Gross

The sun rises on this new day; you awaken and make your bed

Then you scurry down the steps, while good thoughts flow through your head.

You make breakfast for your family, then you take your seat

And when your sister says she's cold, you gladly turn on the heat.

You clean the dishes afterward, then kiss your parents bye.

You walk outside into the sun, and gaze at the morning sky.

You greet your next-door neighbors and scamper down the street

You hop onto the city bus, and tell the driver, "morning, Pete!"

While you're sitting comfortably, an elderly man appears

And your eyes soon fill with tears.

You offer him your seat, and to the back you tread

You realize nonchalantly, that you can stand instead.

You smile at the other passengers; you look at the world passing by

As you approach the church, you heave a forlorn sigh.

When the bus begins to slow, you've reached the end of your ride,

you thank the driver graciously, step off and head inside.

You bless yourself and genuflect, as you come near the pew

You kneel and begin to pray, knowing the Lord is with you.

Throughout the Mass, you're reverent, you thank God for all He's done

And as you receive Christ's Body, you know that He'll soon be receiving someone.

You give all the money you have, as the offertory basket is passed around

You know what is coming next, in the church there is a little sound.

A funeral procession soon begins, for a man who sacrificed his life

He was an officer with true courage, who tried to resolve constant strife.

You knew this man so well, you can feel his family's pain

The sorrow was like a bombardment, of agonizing acid rain.

You comfort the family with kind words, and a sincere, heartfelt embrace

As you approach his casket, you gaze at his caring face.

Later his children ask you, why their daddy have to die?

You look at them lovingly, and give them this reply:

"Your daddy is with Jesus now, in Heaven he resides

And many children and angels he now protects and guides.

He will watch over you each and every day

While you sleep and dream, and while you are at play,

He'll be with you always and you can pray for him,

you can tell him about your day...and your dreams or your silliest whim".

You place your hands over the children's hearts, as your eyes begin to tear,

You tell them in a tender way, "He will always be right here."
